Maine Vehicle Valuation
Choose Your Maine Vehicle Valuation Path
If your vehicle has been in an accident, there are two different situations Maine drivers typically run into — and they call for different kinds of help. If your car was repaired but is now worth less simply because it has an accident on its history, that's a diminished value claim. If your insurer declared your vehicle a total loss and you think the payout is too low, that's a total loss valuation dispute. Pick the path below that matches your situation.

WORKING TOGETHER
Whether your vehicle was repaired after an accident or declared a total loss, Premier DV provides Maine drivers with independent, market-based valuations to support both diminished value claims and total loss appraisal disputes.
01
When your vehicle is repaired after an accident, its resale value typically drops — even with a flawless repair — simply because it now carries an accident history. Maine has no statute specifically addressing diminished value, but the Maine Supreme Judicial Court has held that a standard first-party policy limiting coverage to "repair or replace" does not include diminished value ( Hall v. Acadia Insurance Co., 2002 ME 110). If you're pursuing a third-party claim against the at-fault driver's insurer, however, loss of value can be part of that claim, and Maine's unusually long six-year statute of limitations (14 M.R.S. § 752) gives you time to build the case properly.
02
Maine doesn't set a statutory percentage threshold for total loss, and it doesn't mandate a specific valuation formula — insurers have significant discretion in both decisions. If your insurer's total loss offer looks low, most personal auto policies include an appraisal clause that lets you get an independent value on record and, if needed, take the dispute to a neutral umpire.
Still have a question?
Whether your vehicle was repaired and lost resale value, or your insurer declared it a total loss, Premier DV helps Maine drivers get a fair, market-based valuation.
